The establishment of the Faculty of Sharia (Islamic Law) was connected with the establishment of Omdurman High Scientific Institute in 1983AD. It was made up of one department (Sharia and Law). Admission was processed through direct application to the faculty where interviews were conducted for applicants. That system was followed till 1989.
Post the National Salvation Revolution coming to power, the University was established where the faculty of Sharia was one of its faculties then. The departments of Islamic Economics and Administrative Sciences were established in 1991. These two departments were later separated and transformed into the faculty of Economics and the faculty of Administrative Sciences. Now the faculty of Sharia comprises two departments: Department of Sharia and Law and Department of Fiqh & its Origins.
The Faculty of Sharia has two counterpart faculties at the branches of the University of the Holy Quran & Islamic Sciences in Elobeid and Port Sudan.
